The Power of Intentions

Yoga is the art of skilful action, coupled with loving awareness that awakens our embodiment to an intention set in every practice. An intention is an aspiration or energy that draws us towards love, truth, and creativity, prompting us to reflect on what truly matters. What do we care about? What is essential? What do we desire? What is that deep longing that pulls us forward?

So, let’s listen… Is it to do more of what you love? To nurture belonging to ourselves? Perhaps to find rest or to trust and love oneself more freely and openly? Is it to attract a community that values you and your gifts? To cultivate more patience, tolerance, and acceptance for ourselves and others? To honour boundaries without shame, guilt, or excuses? To prioritise health by embracing a lifestyle of eating, living, and loving oneself? Whatever the intention, notice how it impacts your physical, subtle, and conscious bodies.

Rumi was quoted in staying, “Every heart receives what it prays for.”

Words and their meanings possess a wonderful ability to paint an experience felt in the body, energy, and mind. Certain words can spark a positive neurological effect, empowering, motivating, and even healing us. They tell a unique story within, opening a sensitivity to the symphony of sound they make and the constellation of sensations they evoke.

I always sense that creating an intention is like planting a fruit tree seed within ourselves. We plant a seed of intention, recognising that seeds need both darkness and light. We water it with our loving attention, nurturing it with the warmth from our devoted practice. This allows it to grow healthy roots that face the darkness and challenges in life, soaking up the wealth of benefits that darkness serves to teach us. Once it senses the light, the seed breaks open, drawn to grow upwards by the light we create. It blooms from within, sprouting, growing strong, and maturing over time. It flourishes as a result of all our effort, bearing fruit that ripens. This fruit is what we benefit from, and with the abundance of our produce, we can offer it to others in need. By fulfilling your intentional purpose, it is said that we fulfil a universal purpose, giving back to all sentient beings and to the Source itself. This service gives our life more meaning and purpose.

The practical equation to manifest your intention is simple:

Intention of Desire+Intensity of Energy>Fear-Based Resistance (Karma that keeps you stuck)

Gandhi was quoted in saying,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny”

As a Yogi or Adhikara, the competent student who honours and applies these teachings in all affairs, show up to your devoted practice, abhyasa, whatever that may look like, daily. Set an intention after listening to your heart’s desires, what is inherently true for you, guided by your innate wisdom regarding which intention needs to be fulfilled. Cultivate a practice that activates and builds Prana or your life force energy, directing it to every gesture, grace of movement infused with intention, all designed to find fulfilment in a desired effect.

This has to be bigger than hitting the snooze button, saying “I’ll do it later,” or any of the other self-sabotaging acts we often engage in. Yoga is skill in action with loving awareness that awakens our embodiment to an intention set in every practice.

It is said that there are five essential ingredients to being a Yogi or Adhikara:

  • Shraddha – Faith, a trusted belief that the Universe has your back no matter what.
  • Vidya – Courage, willpower, stamina to persevere through life’s obstacles.
  • Smirti – That which is remembered, to strengthen your memory of what matters to you most. Your intention.
  • Samadhi – Absorption, to spend time in repose, resting in the grounded-ness of being.
  • Prajna – Illumination, guided by the inner light of the heart-mind, that innate wisdom, your inner teacher.

Embodying these attributes of a Yogi, I invite you to listen to what you intend for this practice. Allow this intention to express your deepest truth, love, and creativity within to bring about more meaning and purpose to your life. This act of honouring a deep desire, listening to your soul’s longing, increases self-knowledge, empowerment, and self-mastery to positively affect all aspects of our lives toward fulfilment, joy, contentment, and serenity.

In this practice, use the mantra to emphasise the importance of embracing the challenges you face today, learning from them, and using them as opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery. The intention when we practice Yoga is to overcome the obstacles that keep you stuck in the core false belief that you’re not enough, to develop compassion for the parts that hurt, and to attain your own awakening to the truth inside that you can rely on. This practice reduces attachments, increases our ability to let go of the Karmic ties that bind us to old unhelpful stories that keep us stuck and by giving and helping even through a generous acts, we develop and expand our capacity for kindness and being held by the wholeness of being.

Smile to soften your palate, to listen with more compassion and to see what arises when you ask yourself ‘What do you need to restore you to a state of serenity, sanity and peace?”
