OM Asatoma Mantra Vinyasa Practice

OM asato mā sadgamaya, tamaso mā jyotir gamaya, mṛtyor mā’mṛtaṃ gamaya  Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.28

Guide me from untruth to truth, Guide me from darkness to light, Guide me from death to immortality.

The words to this mantra are simple and timeless, but reinforcing your yoga practice with the words can make all the difference when you are looking for a bit of clarity, direction and hope. This vinyasa practice works to strengthen and stabilise the external rotation of the legs within the pelvis in order to open, release and to prepare you for a seated practice. Drop into all the effort within the practice and ease yourself into a short meditation using the OM Asatoma Mantra.

Zephyr goes deep into the explanation of this particular mantra and hopes you feel the effects of weaving this mantra into your practice. Mantras can be a bit “marmite” for some, but if you haven’t tried a practice with mantra, this is a great one to “give it a go”. Long may the effects of this practice stay with you. The Heart to the Method of Yoga – Abhyasa, Vairagya & Viveka

When practicing the goal is not just to clear the mind of all thoughts and stop thinking rather you should try to increase your capacity to recognise when thoughts are present. Practice training your experience of conscious embodiment to rest in the present moment. This moment is the only time you truly can experience contentment, happiness, connection and awakening (The State of Yoga). To be present two things need to occur; to have the intention to be present and to turn the attention back to the present moment. Try to train the body, breath and mind like a puppy to sit and stay. The mind-puppy will wander into the future and start planning your day, wander into the past and fix a problem of yesterday or fantasise about playing in the park with others. Try to devote a dedicated regular daily practice to lovingly train yourself like a puppy to sit and stay in the moment, building the mental capacity to rest in being, lessening the doing and awake to the truth revealed to us in moment-by-moment loving awareness.

Abhyasa is said to be a focused, diligent practice cultivating the authentic trait of stability in body, breath and mind. Vairagya is a letting go of sensory observation of what arising as thoughts, emotions and sensations. Viveka is the wakefulness of keen discernment as we practice turning our attention back to moment by moment awareness.

This practice works with progressively lengthening the exhale pattern for the desired effect of heat (Tapas), leaning into what is, letting go of that which does not serve and letting be in this moment. Dynamic work within asana and then holding postures to provide that support we desire to trustfully let go.

Removal of Obstacles to Manifest Intentions

This practice weaves Asana, Pranayama, Mantra, Kriya and Mudra ( I know, a lot! Don’t be scared) into a Vinyasa experience to direct Prana to your New Year’s Intention. I will share a little secret with you as there is a simple equation to manifest your Resolution more effectively:

Intention of your Desire + Intensity of Prana > or = to your Obstacle

Working with the teachings from the Yoga Sutra (with a Tantric Twist) you will address the obstacles that you face preventing you from fulfilling your intention. I will help you explore some suggested solutions to remove those obstacles and build more vital Prana to direct it to attaining your hearts Intention.

Using the Deities Ganesha, Lakshmi and Sarawati to add a layer of sound, meaning and energy to the experience, Mantra is a big part of this practice.

Unravelling the Knots that Bind Us – New Years Day Workshop 2021

Granthis are “Knots” binding together the physical, energetic and mental bodies we call the Koshas or Sheaths of embodiment. In Yoga practice we work to experience the undigested information that gets stuck in these layers, discovering what causes the knots and how to unravel them in order to clear space to expand beyond the knot’s limitations.

There are three Granthis that cover six of our seven commonly known Chakras. These knots inhibit a healthy pranic flow of intelligence and function of these centres. Each of these Granthis are said to be the embodiment of three Hindu God-Heads; 

  • Brahma: The Creator, 
  • Vishnu: The Sustainer, and 
  • Rudra: The Roarer/Destroyer. 

Using the philosophical meaning of these three Hindu God-Heads and their three Goddess Consorts, we will unravel the complexity of why we get knotted up in certain areas. The use of Yogic techniques will assist you in untying, opening and creating a free-flowing current towards seeking the clarity of direct expansive consciousness. 

Start off the New Year unravelling the past year’s knots and open the pathway to the expanded state of loving awareness.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Vinyasa Practice

This practice is meant to balance, clear, heal and inspire ourselves as we listen and feel our hearts intention to practice today. Supported by the teachings from the Yoga Sutras, Rig Veda and Buddhism, this very Tantric practice weaving asana, pranayama, mudras and mantra to bring us into a state on oneness with it all!

I will offer the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra as a prayer to rejuvenate and heal ourselves while practicing, reinforcing our dedicated intention to practice.

Gayatri Mantra Vinyasa Practice

This Vinyasa Practice weaves The Gayatri and AUM Mantra. The Gayatri Mantra marks the beginning of the study of the Vedas, celebrating the ‘Great Mystical Utterance’ of the Sun Goddess that enlightens consciousness. Mantra is said to protect the mind by directing thoughts to the meaning and energy of the words spoken and heard. This mantra is a description of practice, meditation and a prayer. One of the oldest and ‘open’ mantras used to celebrate the miracle of Prana Shakti, the creative energy of Life Force within us. The light, likened to the Sun, we connect to, cultivate in practice and open up to as grace, we use to inspire, grow and manifest what our heart desires. The light in practice burns away impurities that cover your true nature, bathing in the light of our consciousness and is consistently there to reveal the hidden divine truths within you.

Nurturing Smile Back to Belonging

This therapeutic session helps us to focus on the fundamental needs in our lives that, for whatever reason, are not being met; feeling safe, loved, belonging to and connected to. Nurturing ourselves back home into our embodiment during practice becomes an act of self-love by holding space for our shadow-side of our humanity and loving us through whatever surfaces. Those negative thoughts, feelings and attachments to our actions are there to teach us and exploring your shadow-side and working through those feelings in your practice can be a transformative experience.

This vinyasa practice will include Mudras which means seal. We will practice throughout a smiling Mudra to shape the breath to be kind, nurturing and patient and hand mudras which will connect us to their unique intention of ‘sealing’ the effects of the gesture within us.

Week 51 December 7-13 Zephyr Zoom Rewind Class

3 Malas

Mala means stain, impurity or veil of ignorance that masks the soul from it’s true nature drawing it into darkness and duality. In other words, Malas are dimensions of limiting knowledge of not only who we are but what we are, pure consciousness. 1. Karma Mala: Identifies yourself by the body, what you do and what you think your appearance is. 2. Mayiya Mala: Identifies yourself with your thoughts. 3. Anava Mala: Identifies yourself by your feelings. That we reduce ourselves by defining who we are by what we think, feel and do.

This practice of hip openings, forward bends and binding will provoke you to wakefully address the thoughts, feelings and actions that surface. By allowing these aspects of us to surface we identify how we get lost in story telling, judgement and limiting ourselves to believe that we are only what we think, feel and do. This practice uses Asana, Pranayama and Vichara to wakefully be present with what unfolds, increasing self- honesty of our struggles and find the path back home within ourselves acknowledging not just who you are but what you are.

Courage to Face Change

This practice provides tools and techniques to help self-regulate strong thoughts, emotions and actions due to changing circumstances. According to the 1st Noble Truth of Buddhism one of the causes of suffering is change. The experience of change can provoke a strong reaction of fear that imbeds itself and distorts how we relate to ourselves, others and our world view. Through asana, pranayama and mindful reflection you can practice ways to strengthen, stabilise and create clarity helping to discern how to move forward through change with resilience.

This asana practice is focused around forward bends, twists and balances with 1:2 Pranayama Breathing and mindful reflection which will allow space to bravely face what surfaces as a result of change.

5 Upayas

The Union of practice; asana, pranayama and meditation should be grounded in mindful reflection called Vichara. This is how you, as the Adhikara (competent student), to take responsibility and accountability of what comes up in practice and skilfully use the Yoga tools to best move forward in your practice and your life.

The Adhikara is made up of 5 essential ingredients or skilful means called Upayas. These Upayas are 1. Shraddha: Faith, Trust, Serenity. 2. Virya: Strength, Courage, Determination. 3. Smirti: Memory of vital information, what matters most, higher purpose. 4. Samadhi: Absorption, Wholeness, Oneness. 5. Prajna: Illumination, Light of Awareness, Rootless Intuitive Wisdom. We will be exploring these attributes within you through Pranayama (breath work) and Asana (physical practice) moving into strong, strengthening backbends and a lateral practice, mixed with twists and nurturing forward bends.

Bija Mantras & Chakras

There is much mis-conception about the Chakras. At the most basic level, they are wheels or vortexes within the body that both receive and radiate energy. There are seven of them and they start at the crown of the head and then are strategically found down through the body to the base of the spine. The Bija Mantras are known as the “seed sounds”, or the one-syllable sounds that activate the Chakras. Mantra is said to protect the mind and the use of these mantras is to spark a positive neurological effect within the body, energy and mind. We use the the Bija sounds to open us to the meaning of what these Chakras hold, empowering, motivating and potentially healing us through practice. I am not a singer so pardon the pitch and tone of my Bija Mantras, but I will try to express the sound and vibration of these teachings for you to explore your unique resonance and to harmonise the systems and to leave you with radiance from your practice.

Vinyasa Practice slowly working with poses to build from the ground – up, exploring the space to apply the Yamas to the practice. The Asanas in this practice are Hip Opening, Forward Bends, Back Bends, Laterals and Twists. The intent of the practice is to open you to the entire space that you occupy, serving yourself before you go out to serve others in your community.

Yamas are the 5 guidelines and ethical disciplines which make up the foundation of all Yogic thought, helping reduce the suffering felt, providing greater space to create clarity in our relationships to others. 1. Ahimsa – Non-Violence in allowing space for others to be as they are and learn what they need to. 2. Satya – Truthfulness, honesty and transparence in our relationships, words and actions. 3.
